How do I build my vastus medialis?

By Emma Valentine |

Here are some vastus medialis exercises you can do weekly at home or in the gym.

  1. Floor extension. This exercise isolates your vastus medialis.
  2. Lateral heel drop.
  3. Step downs.
  4. Leg extension.
  5. Single leg raises.
  6. Terminal knee extensions (TKEs)

What is vastus medialis Obliquus?

It is the most medial, or inner, of the quadriceps muscles. The portion of the muscle that is just above the knee is sometimes referred to as the vastus medialis obliquus, or VMO. This muscle is used to extend the leg at the knee and to stabilize the patella, which is also known as the kneecap.

How do you isolate vastus medialis oblique?

The attempt to isolate VMO muscle activity, may include but are not limited to the following exercises:

  1. Quad sets.
  2. Terminal open and closed kinetic chain knee extension exercises (TKE’s) (Figure 2a and 2b)
  3. Straight leg raises (SLR) with external rotation of the lower extremity (Figure 3)

What is the Obliquus genu muscle and why is it important?

The obliquus genus muscle is the most distal segment of the vastus medialis muscle. Its specific training plays an important role in maintaining patella position and limiting injuries to the knee. With no clear delineation, it is simply the most distal group of fibers of the vastus medialis.

Can you bias the VMO?

The authors concluded that the VMO cannot be preferentially activated and strengthened (Smith et al., 2009). Only 3 of the studies were able to display any preferential VMO activation.

What is the action of vastus medialis?

Function. Vastus medialis, together with the other muscles that make up quadriceps femoris, extends the knee jointand it also contributes to correct tracking of the patella.

What is VMO strengthening?

VMO is short for vastus medialis oblique muscle. It is one of the quadriceps muscles on the inside front of the thigh, just above the knee. Strengthening this muscle is particularly important for knee rehabilitation as it helps control the position of the patella (kneecap).

How do I target my VMO?

Seated Isometric VMO and Adduction: Sit on a chair or platform where your feet hang freely. Place a ball between your thighs and squeeze the ball together activating your VMO. Hold your contraction for 10 seconds. Again, feel your VMO to ensure its activation and increase length of contraction as you become stronger.

How to strengthen vastus medialis?

Sit at a leg extension machine and move your legs behind the pad.

  • Adjust the machine so that the pad is at a little higher than your ankles and your knees fall right at the edge of the seat.
  • Push both of your legs up until they have a slight bend in them.
  • Squeeze at the top of the movement to contract the vastus medialis on both legs.
  • How to stretch vastus medialis?

Vastus Medialis Stretch. Option 1 ~ Standing, flex the knee to bring the foot towards the buttocks. Grasp hold of the foot with your hand behind you, apply a lateral rotation to the hip by pushing the foot towards the midline of the body and gently pull the foot upwards to apply an extension upon the hip. Option 2 ~ From a forward lunge position,…

    How to strengthen VMO?

Dumbbell Step-Up. Stand with your feet hip-width apart about 6 inches away from a box. Step onto the box with your right foot.

  • Lateral Step-Up. Stand with your feet hip-width apart about 6 inches to the left of a box. Step onto the box with your right foot.
  • Cross-Over Step-Up. Stand with your feet hip-width apart about 6 inches to the left of a box.
  • What are “VMO” exercises?

SITTING ISOMETRIC CONTRACTIONS (Toes facing slightly out)

  • SEATED ISOMETRIC VMO AND ADDUCTION CONTRACTIONS.
  • FOAM ROLLER LEG EXTENSIONS.
  • PLIE KNEE SQUATS.
  • BALL SQUATS.
  • SPLIT SQUATS (STATIONARY LUNGE)
  • SINGLE 1/4 LEG SQUATS.
  • STEP-UPS.
  • STEP-DOWNS.
