How do I join NWSChat?

In order to gain access to NWSChat, your account request must be approved by a National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office or Center. Select the office you plan to communicate with based upon your location and role from the list below. Once approved, you will be able to chat with other offices/centers as needed.

What is NWSChat?

NWSChat is an Instant Messaging program utilized by NWS operational personnel to share critical warning decision expertise and other types of significant weather information essential to the NWS’s mission of saving lives and property.

How do I set up NWS chat?

Click the “Add” button to enter your new NWSChat account information. Underneath Login Options, in the top drop down box labeled Protocol, click the down arrow and select “XMPP” to use for NWSChat. This is very important and may often be missed during the configuration of Pidgin. Next, enter your username.

What is nwschat and how does it work?

NWS partners can use NWSChat as an efficient means of seeking clarifications and enhancements to the communication stream originating from the NWS during a fast-paced significant weather or hydrologic event. In order to participate in NWSChat, you must meet at least one of the following standards: NWSChat Live!

Who is not eligible for the NWS followers service?

Note: Individuals, companies, or other entities involved in ‘chasing’ weather events and posting or streaming text or pictures of the event, but do not otherwise have a need to communicate with NWS do not meet the qualifications for this Service, regardless of the number of ‘followers’ or recipients.

Can I use my name as a handle in nwschat?

NWS employees cannot be mandated to use their names as any part of an account handle. As an individual participant you are responsible for any activity that occurs under your account or user name. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any and all passwords used for access to NWSChat.

How does the NWS communicate hazardous weather messages to the public?

This information is exchanged in real-time with the media and emergency response community, who in turn play a key role in communicating the NWS’s hazardous weather messages to the public.
