Is RS232 a COM port?

By Andrew Patterson |

RS232 is a standard protocol used for serial communication, it is used for connecting computer and its peripheral devices to allow serial data exchange between them. As EIA defines, the RS232 is used for connecting Data Transmission Equipment (DTE) and Data Communication Equipment (DCE).

Is serial and COM port same?

A serial port is a 9 pin plug such as the one showed here and it is also called a COM port. USB ports are a different standard from serial ports.

Are COM ports still used?

Many industrial single board computers still ship with serial ports. This interface, which is sometimes referred to as a COM port, has been present on boards and systems for a very long time.

What is a RS-232 port used for?

An RS-232 serial port is most often used by repair technicians to perform diagnostics and service updates. It may also be used to control a device when connected to a computer running a home automation system or Custom Integrated Audio/Video (A/V) system, such as the CAV-M1000ES Multi-room A/V Distribution System.

Is a COM port a USB port?

USB connections do not have com port numbers assigned to them unless its a usb-serial adapter which then it will assign a virtual com port #. Instead they have an address assigned to them.

What is COM serial port?

A COM port is simply an I/O interface that enables the connection of a serial device to a computer. You may also hear COM ports referred to as serial ports. Most modern computers are not equipped with COM ports, but there are many serial port devices still in use that use the interface.

What is RS-232 cable used for?

While USB has become the standard, RS232 is still widely used for older printers in the workplace. The RS232 protocol and cable allow the computer to give commands to the printer via a voltage signal. The printer then deciphers those commands and completes the print.

Is RS232 obsolete?

Two of the oldest interfaces are RS-232 and RS-485. These legacy interfaces aren’t obsolete or discontinued, though. Both are still alive and well in many applications. The whole purpose of a serial interface is to provide a single path for data transmission wirelessly or over a cable.

How do I know which COM port is being used?

To check what port is used by what service. Open device manager Select the COM Port Right click and then click on Properties/Port Settings Tab/Advanced Button/COM Port Number Drop-down menu and assigned the COM port.

Is Rs-232 analog or digital?

I know, obviously, that there are RS-232 “serial ports” and IEEE 1284/Centronix ports “parallel ports,” and that these are “digital” connections. Then you have things like RJ-11 telephone cords and VGA ports that are “analog” connections.

What is an RS232 COM port on a computer?

RS232 COM ports are normally configured as either a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) port or a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) port. The COM port on a personal computer is a DTE port (male).

What is the difference between RS-232 RS-422 and RS-485?

The main differences between RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485. The RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 designations refer to interfaces for digital data transmission. The RS-232 standard is better known as a normal computer COM port or serial port (although Ethernet, FireWire and USB can also be considered as a serial port).

Is the 25-pin D-sub connector RS-232-C compliant?

Presence of a 25-pin D-sub connector does not necessarily indicate an RS-232-C compliant interface. For example, on the original IBM PC, a male D-sub was an RS-232-C DTE port (with a non-standard current loop interface on reserved pins), but the female D-sub connector on the same PC model was used for the parallel “Centronics” printer port.

Is RS232 port DTE or DCE?

RS232 COM ports are normally configured as either a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) port or a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) port. The COM port on a personal computer is a DTE port (male). The COM port on Digi radio modems are configured as DCE port (female).
